Pebble wanted first-time savers to stop thinking about saving at all. We designed and built an app that rounds up every purchase, sets goals in plain words and celebrates every milestone.

Outcomes
Full resultsPebble had plenty of sign-ups, but 71% of them stopped saving within three weeks. Twenty-four interviews showed us four reasons why.

23 days
average gap between transfers
“I always meant to move money. Then payday came and went.”
Every transfer had to be started by hand, so saving only happened on the days people remembered, which was rarely.

Goals were a target amount and a date in a form. Savers called it “a spreadsheet with a logo” and stopped opening it.
Key finding
4 fields
to fill in before saving a penny
“Setting a goal felt like doing my taxes.”
The balance sat three taps deep. With nothing to see day to day, saving never felt like it was going anywhere.

“I never knew if I was getting anywhere.”
Reminders read like warnings. One missed week turned into guilt, and guilt turned into deleting the app.

uninstalled after a missed-saving reminder
“The app made me feel bad, so I deleted it.”
Four habits made saving hard. We replaced each one with something that happens on its own, in a savings app for iOS and Android.

Before: Saving meant remembering to move money
Spare change from every card payment moves to savings, with no thought required. Savers choose a multiplier, and Pebble pauses round-ups by itself when their balance runs low, so saving never leaves them short.
How we built it
Result+£31 / month
Before: Goals were numbers in a spreadsheet
Name what you're saving for and when, and Pebble works out the weekly amount. If a week falls short, the plan quietly spreads the gap over the weeks left instead of asking for it all at once.
How we built it
Result2× goals kept
Before: Progress was invisible until payday
The first thing you see is how close you are, updated with every round-up. Small, frequent movement made progress feel real, and opening the app turned into a quick daily habit instead of a monthly chore.
How we built it
ResultDaily check-ins
Before: Missing a week felt like failing
Small wins arrive as small celebrations, so saving feels good instead of guilty. A missed week gets a friendly nudge with a smaller amount to catch up, never a red warning or a broken streak.
How we built it
Result−48% drop-off
Connect any UK bank in under a minute, read-only, through TrueLayer.
Round-ups stop by themselves when the balance drops below a floor the saver sets.
Face ID or fingerprint to open, and every account detail encrypted.
Reminders written and tested with savers: friendly, never a warning.
Every 10% of a goal gets its own small celebration.
A dedicated team in Zirakpur worked with Pebble's product lead in London. Pebble saw working software every Friday and could change direction any week.

Twelve weeks after the relaunch, three times as many people were still saving, and each of them was saving more.

They didn't just build what we asked for. They found out why our savers were leaving, and built the app that made them stay.
